50 Is What Percent of 20?
Percentages in math can be confusing at times. They can be confusing without the proper formula. If you have that formula, then you will have success in figuring out percentage questions, each and every time. We promise you! You’re lucky, you’ve found someone who is writing this blog post who has also had experience as a math tutor. Get ready for some math tutoring in a super fun way!
How do you find a percentage of a number?
Let’s start with the formula for finding a percentage of a number. You will see and use percentages with shopping quite a bit. Doesn’t this look familiar? Get 20% off $50.
How do you find out what 20% of $50 is?
I have the answer for you! Just multiply! Well wait, first you have to convert 20% into a decimal. Just divide by 100 to find out what that decimal is. So 20/100 is 0.20.
Then you take the decimal and multiply it by the price.
0.20 (the decimal) X 50 = how much money to discount the original price.
0.20 X 50 = $10
Now subtract that discount off the original price. $50 – $10 = $40.
Now we know when they say the discount is 20% off the price and if the price is $50, then the new sale price is $40.
What percentage of a number is another number?
Here is the end all be all formula for finding out the correct answer to a question that will often come up in word problems or simple questions on math tests. So let’s get right to it.
This is not just how much is X% of Y. Nope, this goes a little further.
Here is an example
What percentage of 5 is 3?
In this instance you need a formula.
Let’s name the percentage = X
What X of 5 is 3
So we have 5x = 3
Then you divide by the coefficient of X which is 5 on both sides.
x = 3/5
x = .60
Then you change that decimal to a percentage
You multiply by 100.
So, .60 X 100 = 60%
3 is 60% of 5!
What percent of 50 is 15 ?
Let’s try to use this formula once again.
Let’s name the percent or percentage = X
What X of 50 is 15?
Let’s fix that a little.
50x = 15
Then you would divide by the coefficient of X on both sides. That coefficient is 50.
This leaves us with x = 15/50
15/50 is .30
Then you will multiple that response by 100 to get the percent.
.30 X 100 = 30%
Therefore, 15 is 30% of 50!
What is 20% of $50?
Does the formula change when money is involved? The good thing is, the answer is no! It still stays the same. You just plug the $ back in when you have an answer. Here we go.
When you see a question like X% of Y you just replace “of” with a multiplication sign.
Let’s try it
20% of $50
20% X 50
.20 X 50 = 10
Then you can plug the dollar sign back in.
The correct answer is $10!
Let’s try one more. What is 50% of 20%?
Here is a new one. This one has a % in each number. The rules still apply though.
the “of” is replaced by the multiplication sign.
50% of 20% becomes 50% X 20%
Then you convert the percentages to a decimal.
50% = 0.50 and 20% = 0.20
(Hint, you just divide each number by 100 or move the decimal point over to the left two spaces.)
Now we know the math equation is 0.50 X 0.20 = 0.10
Then you can change it back into a percentage
0.10 X 100 will give us the percentage. The correct answer is 10%!
